Pyers Symon is keen to meet up with fellow Conservative Humanists in the Midlands Area – with a view to forming a branch. If you are interested, please contact me and I’ll pass your details on to Pyers and he will be in touch.
Meanwhile, Pyers has passed this Humphrey/Hacker exchange from Yes Prime Minister, which made me chuckle:
Sir Humphrey: ‘In the Church of England the word Modernist is code for non-believer.’
Jim Hacker: ‘An atheist?
Sir Humphrey: ‘Oh no, Prime Minister. An atheist clergyman couldn’t continue to draw his stipend. So when they stop believing in God they call themselves modernists.’
Jim Hacker: ‘How can the Church of England recommend an atheist as Bishop of Bury St. Edmunds?’
Sir Humphrey: ‘Very easily. The Church of England is primarily a social organisation, not a religious one.’
